One killed in attack on Dalit colony

Police say the situation is under control; 109 people rounded up

HAVERI: The situation at Kanavalli village of Haveri taluk where one person was killed and 13 were injured in an attack on Dalit residences by a group belonging to another community on Friday is under control but tense.

Additional forces

Additional police forces have been deployed in the village with Inspector-General of Police (North Range) Raghavendra Auradkar monitoring the situation.

As many as 109 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Hanumantappa Shivappa Sotteppanavar (60) died of injuries he suffered when Dalit houses at Kanavalli were attacked allegedly by a group on Friday night.

The assailants barged into the houses of Dalits and beat them up, sources said.

Three persons Shivappa Sotteppanavar, Siddappa Yadiyur and Channappa Mudakannavar, who have been injured seriously, have been admitted to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital in Hubli, while 10 others were treated at district hospital in Haveri.

Match result

An altercation between the boys of two communities over the results of a match during inter-school sports meet in the village held on Friday was said to be the reason for the attack.

The boys reportedly brought the issue to the notice of the elders of the community.

And on Friday night, suddenly the Dalit houses were attacked.

Following the incident, the police swung into action and arrested several persons belonging to the other community.

Timely intervention

On Saturday, although the situation was tense, timely intervention by the police stopped retaliation by the affected community.

Mr. Auradkar, who visited the residences of the affected people appealed to them to maintain peace and said adequate security would be provided to them.

Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash has been camping in the village since Friday night.

He told The Hindu that the situation was slowly returning to normality.

Compensation

A compensation cheque of Rs. 1 lakh was handed over to family members of the victim by the taluk administration on Saturday.

Family members of three injured persons were given Rs. 25,000 each while 10 injured persons were given an assistance of Rs. 10,000 each.

Chairman of the State SC/ST Commission and MLA Nehru Olekar visited the village on Saturday and pacified the affected people.

He assured them of requisite steps to help them.
