JAIPUR: The Rajasthan government on Friday denied reports of high casualties due to malaria, dengue and other seasonal diseases in the State. The current year had lesser number of deaths compared to the mortality in the previous year after a successful campaign against spread of malaria, the authorities here said. Health Minister Narpat Singh Rajvi said the State had detected 28,304 persons till September 6 this year with malaria. He said 13 persons had died this year due to malaria against 16 in 2007. The Minister said the State had reported two deaths due to dengue against three in the previous year. The number of patients with dengue too registered a decline in the State with the current year recording 78 cases against 540 cases in the previous year and 1805 cases in 2006. “The situation is under control everywhere in the State. There is no cause for panic,” Mr. Rajvi said. However, the former Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, said the reports were worrisome. “From all the regions of Rajasthan, we are receiving reports of widespread affliction of malaria and other seasonal diseases. The Medical and Health Department needs to gear up to fight the situation.” Mr. Gehlot said he had information on six deaths in Mandana area in Kota district, three deaths in Paparda of Dausa district and two in Nawan of Nagaur district during the past one week. “The health network in the State has failed to cope with the situation arising out of seasonal diseases.”
