Future looks bright for Peter Gojowczyk

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Top seed Peter Gojowczyk of Germany asserted his undisputed authority as he raced to a 6-1, 7-6(1) victory over Aqeel Khan of Pakistan in the final of the PNB $15,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Saturday.

It was the second title in a row for the 19-year-old German who had won last week in Chennai, without dropping a set.

In fact, Gojowczyk dropped only one set this week, in the first round against Rohan Gajjar, before scraping through 7-5 in the decider. He collected $1950 and 18 ATP points.

It was also the fifth singles title at this level from six finals for Gojowczyk, who had won two each in Austria and Mexico, apart from losing a final back home in Germany.

The 346th-ranked Gojowczyk was flawless in the first set as he broke a tired Aqeel with ease in the first, fifth and seventh games to pocket the first set in 21 minutes.

However, Aqeel came up with a better fare in the second set, forcing two breakpoints on the big-serving German in the fifth game.

The German was too good to be teased for long and came up with big deliveries to wriggle out of the temporary trouble.

To his credit, Aqeel saved a matchpoint on his serve in the tenth game and stretched the contest for another ten minutes.

The 27-year-old Pakistan could not sustain his fight in the eventual tie-break as he slithered to defeat against the fluent-stroking German.

It was the second runner-up finish for the seventh-seeded Aqeel from five finals at the Futures level.

He had to settle for $1350 and 12 ATP points.
