Study calls for increasing coir’s marketshare

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Though coir is being increasingly accepted as an eco-friendly material and as an alternative to wood and ply in several instances it constitutes only five per cent of the market, says a study on the export performance of selected coir products from India after globalisation.

The study was conducted by Dr. S. Sudalai Muthu and R. Anitha, faculty of the Department of Commerce, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Ph. D. scholar, Department of Commerce, Bharathiar University, respectively.

The study staid that 95 per cent of the market share was enjoyed by synthetics.

The study recommended modernising production and analysing the demand and competitive prices for coir products. It also suggested that efforts must be made to draw foreign direct investment and to create clusters like export processing zones for coir. The study also suggested that a strategy should be evolved to include Government and NGOs in improving marketing abroad. Along with efforts to boost exports, efforts must be made to popularise coir products within the country by opening showrooms especially in places that draw tourists.
