Boost for community policing neighbourhood watch

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The City Police and Residents’ Associations are in an upbeat mood. After ensuring a crime-free Onam festival, community policing in the city is all set to scale new heights.

Both the police and the residents’ associations sound confident that the record for having the highest number of pookalams (floral carpets) in one competition will soon be accorded to the one organised by the Police Residents Associations Initiative in District Ernakulam (PRIDE).

The competition held at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium had 355 floral carpets, beating the previous record of 344, said a police official. Representatives of the Limca Books of World Records were there. Actor Prithviraj inaugurated the event. The highlight of the event was the 12,000 sq.ft. floral carpet depicting the message of Janamaitri Suraksha Paddhati, the community policing drive.

That broke a previous record of 10,982 sq.ft. floral carpet. Five tonnes of flowers were used for that single pookalam.

Awareness meeting

The Ernakulam District Residents’ Associations Apex Council (EDRAAC) will hold awareness meetings on water-borne epidemics in Palluruthy and Fort Kochi regions. The campaign will be done in association with officials of the Department of Health.
