Staff Reporter

CPI(M) calls for hartal in Nedumangad

DYFI alleges that he was assaulted by Congress activists

Six persons taken into custody

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A tense situation prevailed in the Erimala and Panavoor localities in Nedumangad taluk after a 20-year-old Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activist was found hanging from a tree in a rubber estate on Saturday morning. The police identified the youth as Subash, a resident of Roadarikathu Veedu, Erimala, 12 km from Nedumangad.

Subash, who was a local executive committee member of the DYFI, had left his house on Friday evening along with some friends. The DYFI alleged that Congress activists had entered into an altercation with him and assaulted him. Subash returned home at 8.30 p.m. and later went out. The body was found 250 metres from his house.

Tension prevailed in the area after DYFI workers alleged that Subash was assaulted by Congress activists. They alleged that the body bore bruise marks of assault and that he was murdered. Some Congress activists in the Panavoor area had quit the party and joined the DYFI recently.

Superintendent of Police, Rural, P.K. Madhu and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nedumangad, K. Jayakumar visited the spot.

The body was later shifted to the Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. It was handed over to his relatives and cremated on the premises of his house at 7 p.m.

Circle Inspector, Nedumangad, K. Mohammed Shafi said the police had taken into custody six persons for questioning in connection with the incident. According to the police, those in custody belonged to the Kuruva community and some were relatives of the youth.

The Nedumangad police have registered a case. The post-mortem report is believed to have pointed out that the death was due to hanging and that the body did not bear any bruises.

The CPI (M) has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Sunday in the Nedumangad Assembly constituency in protest against the incident.
