Nuke deal: TD demands Manmohan’s apology

‘The government’s action will harm the country’s sovereign interests’

Demands Parliament session as Centre’s decision will harm country’s sovereign interests

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party on Saturday charged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with ‘misleading’ the nation on Indo-US nuclear agreement and demanded immediate Parliament session to discuss the issue.

TDP Parliamentary Party Leader K. Yerran Naidu, M.V. Mysoora Reddy, MP, and former K. Rammohan Rao, former MP, told a press conference here that the stand of President George Bush that the agreement was not legally binding was contrary to what Dr. Singh had informed Parliament. They demanded the Prime Minister to clarify and apologise to Parliament.

Bill in Parliament

The leaders alleged that the government’s action would harm the country’s sovereign interests. They demanded a Bill in Parliament on enforcement of international agreements. They urged Dr. Singh not to visit the US and sign the agreement till Parliament’s approval.

Referring to Finance Minister K. Rosaiah’s stand that the TDP was trying to blackmail Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, they said the remarks only showed his lack of understanding.

No trust vote

Admitting that they were well aware that the no-trust motion against Mr. Reddy would be defeated, they maintained the party was only utilising a constitutional provision available to educate people.

The leaders criticised Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for taking credit for the success of self-help groups and said it was during the TDP regime that the State earned international recognition as 55 lakh Dwacra groups were formed. They hit out at the government for spending taxpayer’s money for party “propaganda” during the recent visit of AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
