Dangerous precedent

The expulsion of the former Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, from the State Assembly is unprecedented and unfortunate and the majority members of the ruling party should have shown some restraint while taking this drastic step and, as the editorial (Sept. 13) has rightly warned, it would set a dangerous precedent resulting in expelling inconvenient members of the Assemblies and Parliament. There are many MPs and MLAs with alleged involvement in criminal acts. Let the law take its own course to deal with such members on a par with ordinary citizens. The Punjab Assembly’s move is ill-advised.

J.P. Reddy,

Nalgonda

The Punjab Assembly has acted in haste while expelling the former Chief Minister. The powers of Parliament are mistakenly used by the State Assembly and that too for an action which is administrative in nature. Irregularity in land transfer case should be investigated through criminal law rather than the easy route of expulsion. Further, the powers of Parliament and the State Assemblies on the subject should be made clear by the Supreme Court to avoid misuse of such powers at the State level.

E. Sivasankaran,

Coimbatore
