Help at last: A medical team checking patients at the encroached portion of Kumbazha Estate at Chengara in Pathanamthitta on Monday. PATHANAMTHITTA: A 10-member medical team attached to the Health Department visited the Kurumbatty division of the Kumbazha Estate at Chengara on Monday, extending medical assistance to the encroachers owing allegiance to the Sadhu Jana Vimochana Samyukta Vedi following reports of several cases of waterborne diseases from the area recently. Nearly 600 people, including senior citizens, women and children, availed themselves of the health care facilities provided at a medical camp organised at the estate, according to District Medical Officer Aysha Bai. Many of the patients were found afflicted with fever, jaundice and other waterborne diseases. There were also a few cases of TB, according official sources. Anaemic patientsA good number of the patients appeared to be anaemic. Three patients were referred to the General Hospital here. District Collector P.C. Sanalkumar and the DMO visited the estate in the afternoon. According to the sources, the medical camp was organised on the directions of Governor R.S. Gavai. A group of social activists led by B.R.P. Bhaskar, senior journalist, had called on the Governor recently alleging denial of food and medicines to the Vedi workers.
