Srisailam water for Pennar basin

KURNOOL: The irrigation officials have started an exercise to transfer water from Srisailam to Pennar basin in order to ensure supply of 15 tmcft to Chennai city. Unless, the water is stocked either in Somasila or Kandaleru reservoirs in Nellore district before end of the flood period, the Irrigation Department would not be able to fulfil the commitment to Chennai city.

As the Srisailam reservoir got surplus water for the second time and around 1.39 lakh cusecs was discharged through five gates on Monday, the irrigation authorities drew around 10,500 cusecs through Pothireddypadu head regulator.

Of it, around 4,500 cusecs was stocked in the Velugodu Balancing reservoir (VBR) while the rest was released into Nippulavagu to be transferred to Pennar basin. Around 13 tmcft would be stocked in the VBR this year. Similarly, around 3 tmcft would be stocked in the Owk reservoir complex.

Chief Engineer Prabhakar Reddy told The Hindu that two more reservoirs were under consideration at Rajoli and Joladarasi near Koilkuntla with a combined capacity of 3.75 tmcft. Also, there was a proposal to enhance the capacity of Alaganur reservoir.

Work was going on in full swing to install the lift irrigation scheme at Muchumarri to draw 5 tmcft from the Krishna to compensate the water loss to the KC canal on account of transfer of 10 tmcft to Anantapur district through High Level Canal at Hospet. Mr. Reddy said the proposal for construction of a reservoir at Rangapur across the Tungabhadra was under consideration but not cleared by the government. The project is likely to be taken up after the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal finalises the allocations.

The day of irrigation potential in Kurnool district rising to 8 lakh acres under Telugu Ganga, SRBC, Hundri Neeva, KC canal, Guru Raghavendra and Tungabhadra LLC is not too far, he added.
