Cascading glory: Water gushing out of the crest gates of Nagarjunasagar project in Nalgonda district on Monday.
HYDERABAD: Eighteen out of the 26 spillway gates of Nagarjunasagar project were lifted on Monday as the dam was receiving a heavy inflow of 2.5 lakh cusecs of water even after it was full. Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah pressed a button to lift the gates early on Monday morning releasing a quantity of 2.16 lakh cusecs.
This is the fifth consecutive year that the gates of the dam have been opened to discharge the surplus water.
Surplus water
This indicates that Nagarjunasagar does not suffer for want of water despite the Almatti factor if there are good rains in the catchment areas of the Krishna.
After a gap of eight years, the crest-gates of Nizamsagar dam were opened on Monday evening to let out surplus water.
The dam was nearly full. An inflow of 70,000 cusecs was joining the project from where only 15,000 cusec was being discharged into its canals to serve crops.
The gates were lifted at a function attended by the Nizamabad Collector.
