Tension in Uthapuram

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Uneasy calm prevailed in Uthapuram in Madurai district on Monday night when two groups hurled stones at each other.

Police said that when a group of people was proceeding to attend a housewarming ceremony in the village, it burst crackers as part of the celebration.

However, a group annoyed at this objected to the bursting of crackers. An altercation was followed by tense moments and suddenly the groups started to hurl stones at each other.

Madurai Superintendent of Police M. Manohar rushed to the spot and ensured that there were no untoward incidents.

The presence of policemen at the spot averted a major conflict, he told The Hindu. The police, he said, were registering cases against both the groups.

In the stone throwing incident, glass panes of a State Transport Corporation bus was damaged and also there were some damage to a police vehicle, he added.

Further investigation is on.
