Platform handling work has been increased by 33 p.c. Mumbai Rajdhani first train to utilise the new system NEW DELHI: A new route relay interlocking panel was commissioned at New Delhi railway station over the weekend with the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani being the first train to utilise the new system. Commissioned by Railway Board Chairman K.C. Jena, the new system, completed two days ahead of schedule, is aimed at enhancing train operation facilities at the station. According to a Northern Railway official, with the new system becoming operational, platform handling work at New Delhi railway station has been increased by 33 per cent after remodelling work. There are three island platforms at the station, making a total of 16 in place of the existing 12. The official said the longstanding bottleneck in the Sadar area would stand removed and there are six lines in place of the existing three at the Sadar Bazar end of New Delhi station providing an independent corridor for reception and despatch of trains to and from Delhi Junction, Delhi Kishanganj, Sabzi Mandi and Delhi Sarai Rohilla stations. “In order to carry out the remodelling work at the station, 3,000 railway employees worked round the clock and achieved the target two days ahead of schedule. The Railway Board chairman has announced a group cash award of Rs.5 lakh to the employees for completing the work ahead of schedule,” the official said.
