Depiction of change in communication technology

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: With depiction of change in communication technology to disseminate news, the city office of the Press Trust of India (PTI) celebrated Biswakarma puja on Tuesday.

Incharge of the centre Sudhir Behera had crafted out a model of modern digital satellite-based communication system being used by the news agency.

A large model of a computer was the central piece of the decoration. The traditional deity, Biswakarma, who is worshipped as celestial craftsman, was placed in the monitor of the model of the computer.

Mr Behera said it was an attempt to make children and adults understand the changed working process of the news agency.

A decades-old ‘Hindustan’ teleprinter machine which was operational at this centre till a few months ago was also placed near the dais to show the contrast of technology.

Years ago when internet and news channels were a dream, news agency offices were centres of information and the loud beats of teleprinters were their trademark. With time the technology of news dissemination has changed to satellite communication.

But people ask us what happened to that noisy teleprinter system and how we operate the new system, said Mr Behera. To make people of the city understand the technical changeover of the news agency in a simple way, Mr Behera used his artistic skills and worked for over one and a half months to carve out this model to be used as a backdrop for the Biswakarma puja. The mural of the GM of the PTI, M.K.Razdan and the mural of the PTI release that reported views of former president APJ Abdul Kalam on CERN experiment were also part of the decoration.
