TIRUR: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) picketed the SSM Polytechnic College here on Tuesday in protest against the decision of the polytechnic staff council to dismiss a student from the campus. The siege led to a confrontation with the police. However, the intervention of the DYFI and CPI(M) leaders prevented a clash. The CPI(M)-DYFI picketing was the culmination of an unrest continuing for the last few weeks on the polytechnic campus in the wake of the suspension order served on P.K. Muhasin, a third-year Automobile Engineering student. Students under the banner of the Students Federation of India (SFI) were on a strike for the past few weeks demanding revocation of Muhasin’s suspension. According to polytechnic officials, Muhasin was suspended for abusing the principal. However, the SFI insisted that Muhasin was manhandled by the principal when he questioned the latter’s action against another student. The SFI laid a siege to the polytechnic campus on Tuesday morning following the staff council decision to dismiss Muhasin. The CPI(M) and the DYFI joined in when the police forcibly removed SFI activists who picketed the gate on Tuesday. The CPI(M) and DYFI ended their agitation after the polytechnic Principal, following a discussion with the police and local P.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, assured them that the Staff Council’s decision to dismiss Muhasin would be kept in abeyance. Meanwhile, SFI leaders said they would continue their agitation until Muhasin’s suspension was revoked.
