Father gets life term for raping daughter

Staff Reporter

Govt. told to pay the victim Rs.1 lakh

CHANDIGARH: A man accused of raping his minor daughter has been sentenced to life imprisonment here by the Additional District and Sessions Judge, R.S. Attri.

The court also directed the Administration of the Union Territory of Chandigarh to pay the victim a compensation of Rs.1 lakh.

The court directed the Administration, through the Home Secretary, to bear the victim’s educational and boarding charges until she attains the age of majority.

“There can never be a more grave and heinous crime than a father being charged with raping his daughter. It is a betrayal of trust as he is a fortress and the refuge of his daughter,” the Judge said.

“It is a loathsome sin and an unpardonable act. Ordinarily the offence of rape is grave in nature, more so when the perpetrator of the crime is the father. It is far gravest and the rarest of the rare, which warrants a strong judicial hand. Not only this, the victim carries a local stigma and deathless shame as long as she lives,” the Judge added.

The victim, a student of Class VII, had come to the court to hear the quantum of sentence being pronounced.
