Meet on algae bio-fuels begins today

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Growdiesel Climate Care Council and the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology are organising India’s first international conference on algae bio-fuels here from September 17 to 19.

The Algae Bio-fuel Summit 2008 will focus on latest research and development in the field of algae, mass production systems and photo-bioreactor technologies of the algae bio-fuel industry. More than 40 experts from across the world would present papers. Over 300 delegates are expected to take part in the event.

According to the organisers of the meet, algae could be the most efficient source of feedstock for the bio-diesel industry and the fuel generated from its oil is being termed as “second generation bio-fuel.”

It takes a couple of days for algae to start yielding commercially and thereafter oil can be harvested everyday.

“As less than one per cent of the land in India is used for algae farming, there is scope for producing enough to make us self-sufficient in bio-diesel,” said a spokesperson.
