Eight buses damaged, man stabbed Police take several people into custody MANGALORE: Tuesday passed off peacefully, albeit some minor incidents of aggression, after the two-day mass unrest in Mangalore city and on its outskirts. A 25-year-old man sustained injuries after he was stabbed by some assailants. This was the third incident of stabbing since the violence broke out on Sunday after some Christian prayer halls were attacked. The district police said that eight buses had been damaged allegedly by some pro-Hindu activists. The police said that activists, purportedly belonging to Hindu and Muslim organisations, set tyres ablaze on the highway connecting the city with Bantwal, Kalladka and Ullal only to block the movement of vehicles. A similar incident was reported to have occurred near the KMC Hospital at Attavar in the city. Police jeeps kept up a steady patrolling routine and apprehended some people at several places. A heavy deployment of police personnel was seen across the city and on the outskirts. Platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police and the District Armed Reserve were positioned at important junctions in the city as well as in Kalladka, B.C. Road, Ullal and Surathkal. Superintendent of Police N. Sateesh Kumar led a “flying squad” comprising two Vajra-armoured vehicles and several jeeps with police personnel. Armed police sentries accompanied the State transport buses. Inspector General of Police A.M. Prasad said, “People should avoid believing in rumours. If anybody gets any information they should contact the police at once.”
