TRACKER: The three-month-old female puppy with its handler in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: A three-month-old female puppy is the latest addition to the dog squad of the Railway Protection Force here. The Doberman Pinscher puppy brought from Chennai will be trained as a ‘Tracker’ for crime detection. At present, the dog squad has two adult sniffer dogs – ‘Rexy and Flury’ – exclusively trained for detecting explosive substances and an adult Tracker, ‘Stefy’, for crime detection. When the puppy completes six months, it will be sent to the RPF Dog Squad Training Centre at Podanur in Coimbatore for specialised training in crime detection. The training includes obedience, fetching and heel walk, say officials of the dog squad. A handler has been posted to take care of the puppy at the RPF’s kennel in Golden Rock Railway Colony. This is basically to create a bond and an understanding between the animal and the handler, says an officer. Presently, the puppy is being groomed in house manners. A diet schedule is followed for the pup, which is fed with 500 ml of milk, 100 grams of bread, a teaspoon of vitamin tonic, both in the morning and evening. Officials said two puppies would shortly be sent to the RPF kennel here for initial care and later deployed at Villupuram railway junction after being imparted specialised training at Podanur in detection of crime and explosive substances.
