Life term for 16 in triple murder case

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday reversed the acquittal of 16 persons in a 17-year-old triple murder case and imposed life sentence on all of them.
The murders took place on the Vilathikulam Judicial Magistrate Court premises in Tuticorin district on January 22, 1991.
Remission after 14 years
A Division Bench, comprising Justice D. Murugesan and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, while pronouncing the sentence, made it clear that the convicts were entitled to remission of sentence by the State after 14 years.
According to police, a gang of 23 hacked the deceased owing to animosity.
An Additional District and Sessions Court in Tuticorin acquitted all of them on April 16, 1998. Subsequently, two of them died.
The State filed an appeal in 2000 against the acquittal of 19 persons. Pending adjudication of the appeal, one more died and another’s acquittal was confirmed by the High Court.
Out of the17 persons whose acquittal was reversed, the Division Bench postponed pronouncement of sentence on one of them as he was in jail in connection with another case and not produced before the court on Tuesday.
Chance of hearing
The 16 convicts, who were sentenced to undergo life imprisonment, were given an opportunity to express their views on the sentence to be imposed.
All of them either pleaded for minimum imprisonment or pardon with a fine amount.
This was the first case, since the inception of the Bench in 2004, in which the convicts were given a hearing before sentencing them.
