PUDUCHERRY: Giving visual representation for several literary works, the students of Bharathidasan Government College for Women held a two-day literary model exhibition on Wednesday.

The exhibition, which was being held for the sixth year at the college, provided a glimpse into episodes of various literary works, including poems, novels, drama and prose. The students of all three years of B.A. English Literature and B.A. Functional English have displayed the literary models.

“The exhibition enables the students to enrich their communication skills and creativity. It helps them to visualise what they read in textbooks, understand the content and visualise it. This exercise helps them to read and thereby help in better registration in mind,” Ruby Davaseeli, Lecturer of English Department said.

Poems such as ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ written by Coleridge, ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth and ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ by Robert Frost have been given visual representation at the exhibition.

For Sneha Nair, a student of second year Functional English and her team have made a model of the episode of Ramayana wherein Sita was kidnapped by Ravana at the forest of Panchavati. “I have learnt a lot while working for this exhibition. It is important to know Indian literature while we are learning foreign literature,” she said.

Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost,’ Alexander Pope’s ‘Rape of the Lock’ are among other literary works have found place in the exhibition through models.

The students of third year Functional English have portrayed the whole of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ in five models including the sleepwalking scene of Lady Macbeth and encounter between Macbeth and Macduff.

“Through this exercise, we were able to look at several minute things which we did not notice earlier in the text. It has helped us to understand the text better,” said a student Sameena Banu.

The exhibition displayed a total of 28 models and had participation of 145 students. It was inaugurated by Professor Mamotadas of School for Education, Pondicherry University and Principal of the college Babu Rao, Head, Department of English of the college Sadhika Ismail spoke.
