Braille book on life and works of Periyar released

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi released a Braille book on the life and works of Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E.V. Ramasamy at his Gopalapuram residence on Wednesday.

The book, released on the occasion of the 130th birth anniversary of Periyar, was received by N.S. Beno Sebin, student of Stella Maris College, who attended the Young Leaders Conference in the US with financial assistance from Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin.

When Ms. Sebin read out a few paragraphs from the book, the Chief Minister appreciated her. Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami, Mr. Stalin, PWD Minister Durai Murugan and DMK MP Kanimozhi were present.

The book was originally published by the National Book Trust in 1997 to mark the golden jubilee of Independence.

The author is Thanjavur-based Thinkers Forum founder R. Rathinagiri. Later, it was translated into English and released by former President K.R. Narayanan when he visited Kalaignar Karuvoolam at the DMK headquarters.

The book will soon be released in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Mr. Karunanidhi is taking efforts to publish the book in Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Gujarati, Nepali, Oriya, Urdu and Sanskrit in New Delhi.

Tributes paid

Leaders of various political parties paid tribute to Periyar on his birth anniversary. AIADMK leaders, including treasurer O. Panneerselvam, headquarters secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan and organisation secretary Vishalakshi Nedunchezhian paid floral tributes to the portrait of Periyar at the party office. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant garlanded the portrait at the party office.
