Chief Minister lists steps to control price rise
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has said steps taken in the recent past, including supplying rice through the public distribution system at Re.1 a kg and also making available a packet of 10 spices and condiments at Rs.50, was a move to control price rise and reduce the burden of the poor.
Many ways were thought of to reduce the burden on the poor and the low income groups and some of these were selected for implementation.
In a press release, the Chief Minister said if it were true that the price of the 10 commodities was less than Rs.50, then it was a victory in controlling prices.
He accepted that there could be slight differences in prices of commodities between Madurai and Chennai. But this was not huge as supposed by the opponents of the scheme, he said.
The price of these 10 commodities in Chennai ranged from Rs.62.40 to Rs.93.
He also listed the prices in a few prominent shops in Chennai and Madurai to drive home the point that the price announced by the government was the cheapest.
If further reduction of prices was needed, the government would even consider this, the Chief Minister said in the release.
