Orders construction of bus bays along stage carrier routes State asked to restrict trucks with ‘unusual dimensions’ Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to issue directions to the police, particularly the traffic police, and the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) to seize vehicles parked on the national and State highways and other important roads. The Bench comprising Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice Harun-Ul-Rashid ordered that the seized vehicles should be released only after collecting a heavy fine, as provided in the law, and that prosecution proceedings should be initiated against drivers of such vehicles. The judges also directed the State government to issue directives to the police and the MVD to ensure that the goods vehicles or tanker trucks with ‘unusual dimensions’ were operating only with proper indicator lamps on all sides. If the indicator lamps were switched on, other drivers would get an idea about the size and dimension of the vehicle and take care to avert accidents. The government should also consider whether such vehicles should be allowed to operate on narrow single-lane roads, the Bench said. The court also directed the government to construct bus bays at all bus stops on the routes where state carriage services were being operated. The government should take steps to construct bus bays within one year. They observed that a large number of accidents took place on account of buses stopping at bus stops on roads. The court issued the directives while dealing with a motor accident claims tribunal case in which a pillion rider was killed when a motorcycle rammed a parked lorry on a national highway. The judges also directed that reports in this regard be filed every three months.
