Spate of complaints as cheque distribution begins

Staff Reporter

‘Data pertaining to some beneficiaries was wrongly entered in the records’

Genuine beneficiaries not getting cheques because of identify problem, it is said

CPI(M) floor leader wants the process liberalised

VIJAYAWADA: Corporators are at the receiving end of complaints and grievances in the distribution of cheques to Budameru flood victims in the city, which began on Tuesday.

The beneficiaries are grilling the local corporators about the problems cropping up in issue of cheques.

The corporators are facing the ire of the people as the data pertaining to some of the beneficiaries was wrongly entered in the records during enumeration.

The beneficiaries are clearly unhappy with ongoing process, as most of the cheques were being issued in the name of husbands. In some cases, cheques were issued in the name of husband, though the beneficiary is a widow.

Similarly, divorcees were puzzled to learn that the officials were distributing the cheques in the name of their former husbands, say corporators.

CPI (M) floor leader in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Ch. Babu Rao on Wednesday urged Sub-Collector Gaurav Uppal to take necessary measures to ensure that the beneficiaries of Budameru flood compensation did not face any hardship during the distribution of cheques.

He urged the Sub-Collector to issue the cheques in the name of housewives, so that the beneficiaries did not face any difficulty even if the bread-earner was not available during distribution.

Some of the beneficiaries were motor workers and lorry workers, and, hence, might not be present at the time of distribution.

So, there was a need to liberalise the process, so that the beneficiaries who did not have any proof of identity also received the compensation, he said.

Deputy Mayor Samanthapudi Narasaraju said that the matter was brought to the notice of the Sub-Collector. An appropriate decision would be taken to ensure that every identified beneficiary received the compensation, he said.
