VIJAYAWADA: The newly-established Krishna University at Machilipatnam should play the role of a catalyst in the industrial and agricultural development of Krishna district, said speakers at a seminar on the “Role of Krishna University in the industrial and agricultural development of Krishna district and its environs,” here on Wednesday. University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Durga Prasad, while responding to the suggestions, said the university would be interacting with intellectuals and others before designing innovative courses that were relevant to the people of Krishna district. He said the university planned to offer courses in ‘agri-biotechnology’ and ‘marine-biotechnology’ for the benefit of the people of the district. The Vice-Chancellor said that as several great journalists hailed from Machilipatnam, the university’s board of studies felt it fit to offer a course in ‘journalism and mass communication’. A former lecturer of SRR and CVR Government College and veteran columnist Andavalli Satyanarayana said gross injustice was meted out to the district 81 years ago when C.R. Reddy shifted Andhra University that was established here to Visakhapatnam. The injustice meted out to the district was undone with the establishment of Krishna University, he said. He cautioned the university against giving out doctorates “indiscriminately”. He also stressed the importance of revising the syllabi of all the subjects. V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College principal K.R.K. Prasad and Efftronics managing director D. Ramakrishna said that the university should be a bridge between educational institutions in the district and the different industries that were thriving here. They said unless the educational institutions produced a work force with the required knowledge and skills, industries would not thrive. Mr. Ramakrishna said industries would not thrive unless they achieved “operational excellence” and the capability to produce new products. Mr. Prasad said that the university should promote “finishing schools” to improve the employability of the students. Krishna Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition Society secretary G.V. Rama Rao and visiting professor to Krishna University M.C. Das also spoke.
