THANJAVUR: The Co-optex has set a sales target of Rs. 5.63 crore for Thanjavur region for Deepavali said the Collector M. S. Shanmugham, here on Thursday. He inaugurated the Co-optex Deepavali sales exhibition at Ramanathan Mandram. He said that during 2007 Deepavali, Co-optex has made sales of Rs. 436 lakhs exceeding the target of Rs. 4 Crore. Thanjavur region of Co-optex comprises of Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts. The collector appealed to the people to patronise Co-optex to protect handloom weavers. Handloom and agriculture sector are labour intensive and most of the people involved are economically downtrodden. Co-optex has improved its quality and introduced various new designs to compete in the market. Hundred per cent cotton saris and ready made shirts are on display in the exhibition. Cotton attractionsNew saris introduced this year by the Co-optex are Angayarkanni Cotton Silk saris, Kothai cotton saris, Ranga cotton saris, Sirumugai cotton saris, Parameswari cotton saris, Thanigai cotton saris, Mangani cotton saris, Vannamayil cotton saris and Deepan cotton saris. C. Selvaraj, Regional Manager, Co-optex and N. Kannan and A. P. Raja Managers participated in the function. AriyalurA sales target of Rs. 35 lakh has been set for the Co-optex in Ariyalur district. Informing this after inaugurating the special rebate sale at the Ariyalur Co-optex Showroom, the District Collector R. Sudalaikannan urged the public to avail themselves of the benefit of 30 per cent rebate during the festival season up to October 31, 2008, thereby promoting the cause of the weaver community. New varietiesNew designs will be showcased through the Co-optex showrooms in Ariyalur and Jayankondam. Nine new designs of saris besides saris, dhotis, shawls and bedsheets made of pure silk at Tirubhuvanam, Arani and Kancheepuram will be sold through the outlets, he said. Alongside cash transactions, credit sale will be applicable for government employees and those employed in the private sector to the tune of one month’s basic pay, Mr. Sudalaikannan said. K. Moorthy, Tanjore Region Co-optex Manager, and M. Kannan, Branch Manager, Ariyalur Co-optex Branch, were present during the inauguration.
