Association expects 1.5 lakh people to attend it Shivakumara Swamiji to be felicitated at the conference SHIMOGA: The State-level conference of the State government employees will be held here on November 15. Karnataka State Government Employees’ Association president L. Byrappa said that about 1.5 lakh government employees were expected to participate in the conference which was being held outside Bangalore after a long time. He said that apart from drawing the Government’s attention to the problems of its employees, a workshop would be held as part of the conference to discuss “people-friendly administration”. Mr. Byrappa said Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would inaugurate the conference. Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Math would be felicitated on the occasion. He said that although the State Government had accepted many demands of the association, pay parity with Central Government employees and the raising of retirement age from 58 to 60 needed to be sorted out. DefendedMr. Byrappa defended the Government’s decision to increase the age of retirement of its employees from 58 to 60 without being asked for it and said that it had become necessary to cope with the increased volume of work. He said the strength of the employees was not in proportion to the population. There were 5.25 lakh State government employees when the State’s population was three crore. The number of employees remained the same but the population had gone up to six crore. He said that 1.25 lakh posts were vacant at various levels in government departments. The association had decided to associate itself with several welfare measures being implemented by the “Apna Desh” voluntary service organisation which included the adoption of the backward villages. Mr. Byrappa said the association donated Rs. 95 lakh to the boarding school being run by the Siddhaganga Math where nearly 10,000 poor children were fed every day free of cost.
