“Overwhelming response to student laptop scheme”

Staff Reporter

Tiruvannamalai: The student laptop scheme introduced by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has received “overwhelming” response in Tiruvannamalai district.

Under the scheme, students and government employees can purchase Acer laptops with a specific configuration at Rs.31,000. The same brand of laptops with identical configuration cost few thousand more in the market, according to ELCOT officials.

The Tiruvannamalai branch of ELCOT conducted an exhibition of the laptops at the Collectorate on July 19.

According to ELCOT branch manager Jayachandran, about 12,000 students registered along with full payment, before the end of registration last month. “The response was overwhelming. Those who registered with payment will get a confirmation email. According to estimates, we supplied laptops to 30 per cent of the people who have registered. Rest of them will get it in a phased manner,” he said.
