Brahmins seek reservation in education and employment

Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL: The Tamil Nadu Brahmins Association (TAMBRAS) has urged the Government to provide reservation in education as well as employment to people of Other Castes.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the association’s regional conference held here recently.

The members also wanted the Government to protect the rights and welfare of Brahmin community, the fifth largest group in the State.

Addressing presspersons, the State president, N. Narayanan, said that the Government should take immediate steps to construct a ‘mani mandapam’ for freedom fighter Vanchinanthan in order to make the younger generation aware of his role in the freedom struggle. As per the Supreme Court verdict, the Government should provide only 50 per cent reservation to the oppressed and marginalised people in the State, he said.

The Government should explore the ways and means to set up an autonomous body to maintain temples, Mr. Narayanan said.
