Varsity convocation tomorrow

CHENNAI: A total of 11,371 medical undergraduates from M.B.B.S., dental, Indian medicine and paramedical courses will receive their degree certificates on Saturday, at the 18th convocation of Dr. MGR Medical University.

About 59 per cent of them are women, Vice-Chancellor Meer Mustafa Hussain said at a press conference here on Thursday. A total of 58 gold and 17 silver medals and 38 cash prizes will be awarded to 62 meritorious candidates.

Candidates who have completed Ph.D., D.M., M.Ch., post-graduate degree and diploma courses will also receive the certificates on that day from Governor S.S. Barnala. Vice-President Hamid Ansari will participate in the function.

“This year women have taken the lead in winning medals. The winners are from PSG Medical College, Coimbatore, Madras Medical College (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and Thanjavur Medical College (M.S. General Surgery). Usually women do not opt for general surgery but this candidate has even excelled in the subject and won medals,” Dr. Mustafa noted. A male student from CMC, Vellore, has bagged two gold and a silver medal and two cash prizes.

At the convocation, eight senior doctors, including orthopaedist A. Devadoss, diabetologist V. Seshaiah, geriatrician R. Sivaraman, orthodontist J.G. Kannappan, cardiologist T. Sathyamurthy, ENT specialist Mohan Kameswaran, besides retired professors T.V. Devarajan (medicine) and K. Chinnaswamy (pharmacy) will be conferred the honorary Doctor of Science degree, Dr. Mustafa said.

Among a slew of programmes sanctioned for the university is a fund of Rs. 4 crore to upgrade the Department of Transfusion Medicine.

The university is also planning to start several master’s and diploma courses in various subjects from the current academic year.
