Case against Karunanidhi: proceedings stayed
Legal Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Justice P. Swaroop Reddy of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday stayed all further proceedings, including appearance of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, in a criminal case filed at Adoni in Kurnool district.
The judge was dealing with a petition filed by Mr. Karunanidhi requesting the court to quash the complaint filed by V. Mallikarjuna and stay further proceedings.
The complainant alleged that the utterances of Mr. Karunanidhi in the wake of the ‘Ram Sethu’ controversy had hurt the sentiments of Hindus and sought his prosecution under various provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The present petition, filed in the High Court, argued that the Chief Minister was a public servant and permission from the appropriate authorities had to be obtained before initiating such proceedings.
It was averred that no case had been made out by the petitioner in the Adoni court. The judge issued notices and granted stay of all further proceedings.
