CHENNAI: Station Fire Officer (SFO), Saidapet, and the Junior Engineer of the Chennai Corporation division number 127 have been added as accused in the case relating to the fire in Saravana Vessel Store on Ranganathan Street on September 1, the government has submitted before the Madras High Court.

In his order on Friday granting conditional bail to the Sales Manager, Selvam and the Supervisor, Jabasingh Paul Gnanadurai, Justice R. Regupathi said the government advocate (criminal side) had submitted that on the basis of the documents and materials furnished by the arrested accused, T. Balasubramanian, SFO, Saidapet, and Srinivasan, Corporation JE, were arraigned as accused in the case.

The officers of CMDA who had accorded sanction for constructing the building, were being examined and several vital documents had been seized.

Mr. Justice Regupathi said the two petitioners were only employees of the store and it was one of them who had given the first information report to the police.

The petitioners were staying nearby and had rushed to the scene of occurrence after knowing about the fire. Since they were available on the spot on the date of occurrence, they were arrested and remanded to judicial custody the next day itself.

It was submitted by the petitioners that they had cooperated with the investigation.

The Judge said since the two happened to be employees and as they had been in judicial custody for 17 days, he was of the view that they may be enlarged on bail on executing a bond for Rs.25,000 with two sureties each for a like sum to the satisfaction of the XVII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, Chennai.

They should report before the police concerned daily at 10 a.m., until further orders.
