Chief Minister lays stone for irrigation schemes

K.M. Dayashankar

MANTHANI (KARIMNAGAR DT): The villages in the interior of Manthani Assembly segment in Karimnagar district can now hope for an end to their water problems with the laying of foundation stones for the ambitious lift irrigation schemes in the segment by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday.

These villages, which are tucked away along the shores of river Godavari, are starved of water for drinking and irrigation purposes. In spite of availability of abundant water resources, the villagers are unable to utilise the same because they are located in high altitude. Neglect of successive governments has forced them to remain backward forcing the spread of naxalite movement. The Chief Minister laid foundation stone for the Sri Kaleshwara Muktheeswara lift irrigation scheme at a cost of Rs. 500 crore at Kalteshwaram temple in Mahadevpur mandal and the Sripada Yellampalli project lift irrigation scheme at a cost of Rs. 100 crore at Lakkaram village of Manthani Mutharam mandal. Incidentally, Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy is the first Chief Minister to visit these naxalite affected villages and participate in several developmental programmes and also offer prayers at the Sri Kaleshwara Muktheeshwara Swamy devasthanams in Kaleshwaram. It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had earlier toured the naxalite villages of Mahamutharam, Kataram mandals during the Rajiv Palle baata.
