This Day That Age
The Ceylon Prime Minister, Solomon Bandaranaike, told the House of Representatives in Colombo on September 18 that “certain organisations” had planned a coup d’etat during the recent Tamil-Sinhalese disturbances in the country. He would place information about these activities before the House on September 19 when the House would consider regulations promulgated under the three and a half month old state of emergency. The Prime Minister was speaking on a supplementary demand for grant amounting to 8.2 million rupees to meet expenses incurred on the armed forces during the disturbances. He said about 10,000 people were enlisted by the armed forces to cope with work during the disturbances. Paying a tribute to the security forces, he said, they had saved the country from a “very terrible catastrophe”.
