News Analysis
Two reports “Feminists welcome Centre’s decision [to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971]” (Kerala editions, September 19, 2008, page 3) and “[Kerala’s Catholic] Church against relaxing abortion law” (Early editions, September 19, 2008), had the sentence “… the Central government’s move to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971 to increase the length of terminable pregnancy from 20 months to 24 months.” A number of readers point out that it should have been 20 weeks to 24 weeks! The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “3G: foreign players can bid without domestic partner” (“Business” page, September 19, 2008) gave the designation of Siddhartha Behura as Chairman, Telecom Commission, while the text gave it as Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura. Both designations are right. Mr. Siddhartha Behura (Uttar Pradesh cadre, 1973 batch), and not Siddharth as published, was appointed Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, in January this year. The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in an interview “Embankments — or should we say entombments?” (Op-Ed, September 19, 2008) was “Bihar’s woes: A woman being consoled as she leaves her marooned village, Trivanigunj, 70 kilometres off Patna.” Trivanigunj is nearly 200 km away from Patna.
