LTTE “strong points” attacked

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military claimed that at least 24 LTTE cadre, two soldiers and a civilian were killed in fighting in the north and east in the last 24 hours.

The Air Force claimed to have pounded three “strong points” of Tigers located three km north-west of Vannarikulam, Kilinochchi, on Friday. It said the raids were “successful”.

The military said a soldier and a civilian were killed in an LTTE attack in Ampara district on Thursday. It said that five Tiger cadres were killed in retaliatory attack.

Separately, in a report posted on its web site, the LTTE alleged that at least three civilians were killed and several injured in the Air Force bombing and an attack by the Deep Penetration Unit. The military denied the charges.

It also alleged that the blocking of food convoys by the military for three days this week raised concern in the Kilinochchi District Secretariat.
