Seminar throws light on higher education in UK

Staff Reporter

Students asked to spend more time in selecting universities

Main intake is in September and October

Taking IELTS will help in getting admissions

PUDUCHERRY: Providing information on courses, scholarships and application procedures for pursuing higher education in the United Kingdom, the British Council held a public seminar on “Study Opportunities in the UK and IELTS” on Saturday.

The team from Education UK of British Council shed light on the educational opportunities available at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, entry requirements for the courses, cost of study, selection of institutions and scholarships. The seminar saw a good response from the students here.

In a presentation, Head of Education UK, south India L. Dhanasekaran said that the main intake was during September and October, while another intake period was January and February. However, majority of the scholarships were available for the September intake.

“The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) was a must for Masters in Business Administration. We advise that students take the IELTS as it will help in getting admissions and at the time of getting visa. In case students have any difficulty in English communication skills, then IELTS gives an opportunity for them to get additional support from universities before the starting of the course through pre-session English programmes,” he said.

Regarding selection of universities, he said a Quality Assurance Agency in UK visits individual departments of universities and checks on categories such as course content, curriculum, teachers experience, research activities, projects, percentage of students who pass and how soon students get employment.

“Depending on each of these categories, the agency provides markings for the institutions,” he said. The Education UK team also advised the students to spend more time on researching for selection of universities and shortlist the institution which best suits their requirements. Information on average tuition fees for course, different kinds of scholarships, visa procedures and application procedures for scholarships were provided to the students during the seminar.
