Panel exploring options to save Pallikaranai marsh

P. Oppili

CHENNAI: The Experts Committee on Pallikaranai marsh constituted by the Madras High Court held a meeting on Friday.

The committee is looking at options of waste reduction. As a pilot programme, an intensive zero waste management drive will be conducted in 1,500 households in Kalakshetra Colony, Besant Nagar from October 2. The programme will be extended to other parts of Besant Nagar and Shastri Nagar before the end of the year. A decision to hold a meeting involving all 1,500 households to orient them to the action plan of zero waste management will be held at a playground on Rukmani Road on September 27. The Chennai Corporation and non-governmental organisations will provide technical assistance. For those who cannot compost, a zero waste management centre will be established in the colony for community composting.

All recyclable waste materials will be collected from each house by a trained collector, which will be sent for recycling. Only non-recyclable wastes will go to the compost yard at Pallikaranai.

Convener of the committee Sheela Rani Chunkath, Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, representatives of residents’ welfare associations and members of Civic Exnora participated in the meeting.
