Villagers oppose ethanol factory
Correspondent
VIZIANAGARAM: Villagers of Kinthalavanipeta in Bobbili mandal, led by the CPI (M), on Saturday staged a dharna in front of the tehsildar’s office opposing construction of ethanol unit by NCS Sugars Limited (formerly Nizam Sugars), Latchayyapeta.
When contacted Reddy Venu, divisional secretary told this correspondent over phone that the villagers had been opposing the factory as pollutants from the factory entered their houses in the past. He said that the management had begun distribution of compensation of Rs.1,000 to Rs.5,000 for the last two days for the loss they had incurred. At the same time, it had been, with the connivance of sarpanch Bonthalakoti Chandrudu, collecting their signatures on blank white papers. A ward member of the village Y. Gopalam questioned the rationale behind collecting signatures and expressed doubt over the intentions of the sugar factory management. When the villagers gathered, the sarpanch and his men reportedly thrashed the ward member causing heartburn among women and youth. A complaint was lodged with the police on Thursday night.
