DMK gets more seats in local body polls

CHENNAI: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam got more seats than the other parties in the casual elections to local bodies in the State on Thursday.

In Chennai city where bye-elections to two wards 18 and 44 were held, the DMK captured both, while in Madurai city, the result of the bypoll in ward 52 has been withheld.

As regards municipalities, the DMK bagged four seats while its rival, AIADMK, and an independent won one seat each.

In the third grade municipalities, the DMK and AIADMK won two seats each. Out of the 29 seats in town panchayats, the DMK got 10, AIADMK 7, Congress 3, BJP 2, CPI (M) 1 and independents 6. In the District Panchayat Ward members elections, the DMK won both seats.

Elections were conducted for 13 Panchayat Union Ward members, of which 12 had been declared.

The ruling party bagged 7 seats followed by AIADMK 4 and Communist Party of India 1, according to a press release.
