Bring theatre to the people: Nedumudi Venu

Kochi: Film actor and theatre personality Nedumudi Venu has said that involvement of film actors such as Mohanlal and Mukesh in theatre will help bring plays closer to the people.

Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Ernakulam Press Club on Saturday as part of the ongoing ‘Pranamam,’ a national festival of plays by Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, Venu said that instead of popularising theatres, effort should be to bring drama to the people.

While plays were the reflection of real life, films were make-belief works, he said. While films had a short life, plays had a long-term impact.

Venu stressed the need for developing a theatre culture among the people.

People were alienated from theatre not just because there were no good plays. There were no good theatre houses here, as there were in other States.

Venu was of the opinion that permanent theatres could be set up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode if theatre personalities and other organisations made a concerted effort.

He said that unlike in films, it was difficulty to act in plays. Asked about the allegations made by actor Thilakan against him, Venu said that Thilakan had proved his mettle as an actor equally well in theatre and films. Most often, stage actors would not be good when it came to film acting.

He said Mr. Thilakan made the allegations perhaps because he had to remain idle for a few days after a busy schedule. He added that controversies would often help to bring out truths.
