Bangladesh polls on December 18

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: The head of military-backed caretaker government, Fakhruddin Ahmed, has announced that parliamentary elections would be held on December 18.

In a TV broadcast on Saturday, he also said the controversial ‘upazila’ (sub-district) elections would also be held between December 24 and December 28 in two phases. He, however, did not give a commitment for withdrawal of Emergency. The political parties have not reacted yet, particularly on the plan to hold a two-phase election in nearly 500 ‘upazilas’.
