Hunt on for 9 more blast suspects
Devesh K. Pandey
NEW DELHI: The serial blasts in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Uttar Pradesh were allegedly carried out jointly by the Indian Mujahideen and the Students Islamic Movement of India with active assistance from the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The Delhi police have launched a hunt for nine more Indian Mujahideen members, all belonging to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said the LeT directed SIMI leaders to contact the Indian Mujahideen to carry out terror acts.
“This is how SIMI’s Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer came in touch with the Indian Mujahideen head, Mohammad Bashir,” said Mr. Singh.
Having executed the Jaipur and Ahmedabad blasts, 24-year-old Bashir’s module conducted a reconnaissance of the targets in Delhi on September 11. During interrogation, Saif Ahmad, who was arrested following an encounter with suspected militants at Batla House here on Friday, is said to have disclosed the names of those involved in the blasts.
“Saif and Khalid planted a bomb near Regal cinema around 5.45 p.m. While Bashir and his accomplice Junaid planted the bombs at Greater Kailash, Sajid and Zeeshan kept one on Barakhamba Road. Mirza Shadab Baig and Shehzad planted a bomb at India Gate and Shakeel kept another near Gaffar Market on September 13,” said Mr. Singh.
