Bajrang Dal leader arrested

BANGALORE: A week after the serial attacks on churches commenced, the situation in Karnataka has returned to normality although fear still grips the minorities in certain pockets.

State Bajrang Dal convener Mahendra Kumar, who owned responsibility for the attacks on churches in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, has since been arrested.

Chief Minister B.S.Yeddyurappa has ordered a judicial probe headed by a former judge of the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh High Courts, B.K. Somashekara into the attacks.

Sources in the State government told The Hindu that in the only incident reported in the early hours of Saturday, some unidentified people attacked a prayer hall (masjid) at Sagar in Shimoga district .

Some window panes were shattered and the culprits left behind a garland of footwear.

Replies sent

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao has replied to the two advisories sent by Union Home Secretary and the Joint Home Secretary on violence against Christians.

While one reply was despatched around midnight on Friday night, the other spelling out more or less the same details of pertaining to the action taken by the government was sent across on Saturday.
