New project to come up near Azad Market 187 shopkeepers to be affected by the work NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has embarked on an ambitious project to widen the road under-bridge at Kishan Ganj near Azad Market here. Making the announcement, MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta said the project, which is slated to begin soon, would cost the civic body Rs.56.46 crore. He said part of the widening of the road under-bridge on the Delhi-Rewari-Rohtak railway line would be carried out by the Railways and the remaining works of road widening, providing footpaths and improved sewerage system, street-lighting and beautification would be carried out by the civic body. According to Mr. Gupta, 187 shopkeepers would be affected by the widening work and while the MCD would rehabilitate 121 shopkeepers at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, the remaining 66 shopkeepers would be rehabilitated by the Delhi Development Authority. “The Azad Market intersection is one of the busiest and most congested crossings in Delhi and frequent traffic jams are witnessed at the crossing. To ease traffic flow, the MCD has formulated two big projects. One is construction of a grade separator from Rani Jhansi Road to St. Stephen’s Hospital at a cost of Rs.177.72 crore and the second project is widening of the road under-bridge at Kishan Ganj. Once these projects are completed, traffic flow in this area would ease considerably,” he added. The widening of the road under-bridge would ensure a smooth traffic flow coming from North-West Delhi and going towards various parts of Central Delhi, trans-Yamuna areas, Inter-State Bus Terminus and Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations.
