HYDERABAD: One Intermediate student died and 28 sustained injuries when they fell from the third floor of their college building following collapse of the parapet wall and staircase railing on Saturday at Chengicherla village on city outskirts. The victim was identified as Lokeshwar Reddy, 17, hailing from Miryalaguda of Nalgonda district. The body was shifted to Gandhi hospital mortuary. Twenty-two of the injured were admitted to Kamineni hospital and the remaining to SHK hospital at Uppal. The tragedy occurred around 12.30 p.m. when nearly 180 students of A1 and A2 classes on the third floor of Narayana College building broke for lunch and started walking towards the staircase. The four-foot-wide corridor was crammed with students carrying plates headed for the dining hall. “As our lecturer sswas trying to send one by one, the single-brick parapet wall and the staircase attached to it began giving away,” a student, R. Vinay said. Within seconds, the wall collapsed together with the thin staircase railing. Students slipped and fell on the septic tank on the ground. The concrete slab on the septic tank too caved in, but fortunately none fell into it. The building owner, Amarender Goud, was absconding.
