TIRUNELVELI: The second regional parents’ meet of ‘Parivaar,’ National Federation of Parents’ Association for persons with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities, has appealed to the Union Government to conduct a special census during 11th Plan to determine the exact number of intellectually disabled persons in the country so that adequate fund can be allocated to ensure their social security through their parents.
Addressing the inaugural function held here on Saturday, the president of the organisation, Jayant P. Gadkari, said that the State and Central governments should do something concrete to strengthen the livelihood of the parents of the intellectually disabled and also the affected as these kinds of disablement was interconnected with poverty, which was prevalent in the rural areas of the country.
Right quantum of funds
“If the Governments have to allot the right quantum of funds for the betterment of the mentally disabled persons, the exact population of intellectually disabled has to be determined by conducting a special census during the 11th Plan,” Mr. Gadkari suggested.
Corporation Commissioner T. Mohan, and District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer T. Manohar addressed the gathering.
Earlier, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli range, P. Kannappan, flagged off a rally of the mentally disabled children from VOC Grounds, Palayamkottai.
