KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Saturday at the Raj Bhavan. The meeting lasted one and half hours, but there was no official briefing. Raj Bhavan sources said that the meeting was a closed-door one This is Mr. Bhattacharjee’s first meeting with Mr. Gandhi since his (the Governor’s) return from New Delhi on Thursday and since the announcement by the State government, of a rehabilitation package for the Singur farmers who are yet to pick up their compensation cheques for their land. The last date for applying for this package is September 22. The four-member committee with equal representation from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the save farmland Committee and the State government has also stopped its parleys since the announcement of the package and its rejection by Ms. Banerjee. Mr. Bhattacharjee’s meeting with the Governor comes a day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee met him. She said after the meeting that “Let us hope for the best adding that the State government will have to show honest intentions to operationalise the agreement signed after the talks held in Mr. Gandhi’s presence a fortnight ago.” Last week, the State government had come out with a package which offered 70 acres of land within the project site alongwith an enhanced rehabilitation package. It had also issued prominently-placed advertisements in city-based dailies publicising the package.
