PUDUCHERRY: Art and Culture Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan on Sunday said that the government would soon take steps to install a statue for poet Thamizh Oli at Salaipillai Thottam. Speaking at the 85th birth anniversary celebrations of the poet, the Minister said, “There has been a demand for long time to install a statue for poet Thamizh Oli. We have identified a location at Salaipillai Thottam. A committee will be formed for the purpose and works will be taken up as per their recommendations. We will also talk to the Chief Minister.” He said that members of the poet’s family would also be part of the committee. “The works of the poet should be kept at libraries. His works, which mostly spoke about labourers, should be taken to students too,” the Minister emphasised. The celebrations were organised by the Art and Culture Department, Government of Puducherry along with South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur. Director of Art and Culture S. Bhanumathy was present on the occasion.
